Vicky Oliver was commissioned by Wormholt School to teach yoga to year 6 for two terms. On the last day she decided to try out her Unity Breaks in the classroom. This is what the children and their teacher Katy Brown had to say: It is funny, I liked drinking the laughing juice. A nice way to end the day. Some of the activities calm you down makes you forget about bad thoughts. It was FANTASTIC, when I'm older I will like to go to yoga classes because I enjoyed it. It was enjoyable, everyone laughing is a nice sound. I didn't want to do it a first but when I started it was good fun. Yoga was different to what I thought it was when you crossed your legs and hummed! When your down the laughing cheers you up. I thought yoga was for girls and I didn't want to do it. I really enjoyed it and it calmed me down. It developed skills of trust. The spine exercise was relaxing and soothing. I thought that the yoga sessions and unity breaks were very beneficial for the children. It helped them to channel their thoughts and be in a calm and serene moment when they were doing it; for many of the children this is a rarity with home backgrounds that are challenging and stressful at times. The unity breaks were fantastic and so easy to fit in at different times of the day. Some were great for calming, others for raising energy levels and some for creating harmony and cohesion within the group. The children loved doing these activities although it took a while for the children to feel comfortable giving eye contact and letting themselves go but as time went on they found this easier. One thing I will always think of is when the children did the laughing juice; their smiling faces and the sound of childrens laughter reminds me why I chose to work with children!!! | ||
